Our newsletters have thus far discussed various server form factors but we realize that our customer base is also a big user of desktops as well. As such, this newsletter provides an outline of how Supermicro New Zealand can help via Compucon New Zealand.

As the table indicates, the Compucon desktop series is classified in 2 dimensions. The first is the level of performance and the second is the source of technology.
There is no clear and hard demarcation for the 3 classes of performance. For example, an entry level Intel based Compucon Diamond system can have a high performance Core 2 Quad CPU, 4GB of memory and a good graphics card. This system may perform faster than a Compucon Superhawk from the Performance class.
In fact, the main differentiation between the base hardware configurations is cost. For example, if the customer wants a reliable PC for basic applications such as Internet browsing, email handling and accounting, the entry level Compucon Diamond with its base hardware will do the job adequately. Depending on what applications will be used, the class dimension helps customers choose a PC that can do the job starting at a lower price point.
Intel leads and sets the performance benchmark in the high performance range. AMD systems still offer good value for money and have the benefit of better integrated graphics for HD multimedia playback and 3D applications. Discrete VGA cards can be used on either Intel or AMD platforms, which helps ease this disparity.
A note of caution is due for hardware based virtualization technologies used by VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V or XP Mode under Windows 7. All Athlon and Phenom processors are supplied with AMD-V features and all Core i7 and i5 processors are supplied with Intel VT features too. However, not all Core 2 processors have the feature so be sure to check beforehand.
A tower case is the prevalent form factor for desktops. Nevertheless, there is nothing that stops desktops from being installed into standard 19" racks other than cost. Compucon can supply 5U with the lowest price tag, and 2U/4U as upgrade options. Compucon also supplies a "Short 1U" for specific applications such as Digital Signage, Point of Sale or Appliances as the short 1U is very compact (4.3cm high, 25cm deep) and light (< 5kg).
In all situations, all desktops are assembled on Compucon ISO-9001 quality assured procedures and carry 2 years standard RTB warranty. Windows is pre-installed via an automated system for further quality assurance. Feel free to contact the editor for further information as desired.
