Blade Server Brief
30 September 2008

Supermicro has produced 2 families of SuperBlade servers: a DatacentreBlade supporting 14 blades and an OfficeBlade supporting 10 blades.  Apart from blade density they have very similar features and are both housed in a 7U chassis.  The OfficeBlade has a Quiet version offering a lower noise level and can be fitted with a small cabinet for locating in an office environment.

Both families offer an extensive range of blade technologies:

  • 2-way Intel Xeon 5000 series processors
  • 2-way AMD Opteron 2000 series processors
  • 4-way AMD Opteron 8000 series processors
  • Hot-swap and redundant modules- chassis management & PSU
  • Chassis management with IPMI 2.0, KVM-over-IP, remote Virtual Media (Floppy/CD/Drive redirection), remote power control, etc. through a web interface
  • Network GbE switch, GbE pass-through, 4x DDR InfiniBand switch

A typical blade supports the following:
  • Intel or AMD
  • Dual or Quad Processor
  • 6, 8 or 16 DIMM Slots
  • 6x 2.5" or 2x 3.5" HDD
  • Hardware RAID for up to 6 HDDs option
  • Infiniband Mazzanine Host Adaptor option

In terms of market competition, Supermicro blade servers have higher computing and storage density, higher PSU efficiency, lower noise and lower TCO pricing.
