Supermicro New Zealand
Channel Newsletter
31 October 2007
Bang for Bucks
The majority of our channel members are IT professionals or practicing in the IT industry. Computer systems are either productivity or production tools. That is, channel members use computers for commercial reasons and there is every reason for wanting the maximum juice out of the dollars spent- this is fair enough. How do we get maximum juice? There are 2 criteria or possibly three. They are fitness for purpose, total cost of ownership and return on investment. Fitness for purpose requires us to know exactly why we buy computers and how we will use them. Cost of ownership requires an awareness of all the factors that cost the company money on top of the hardware purchase price. Return on investment is quite simple to explain - either you know it and have worked it out, or you do not know it and do not want to know it. Many people have the perception that hardware prices are cheap these days and we can throw away the bad ones if they are found to be bad later on. This is not professional. We should know if the computer is fit for purpose and will give us the maximum benefits in the first place.
This is where Supermicro New Zealand comes in. Although we represent Supermicro as a distributor as well as a system integrator, we believe the latter role is more vital and beneficial to New Zealand. Good components do not make good systems. Good components, good skills and good systems make good systems. Our team here can advise you on fitness for purpose and cost of ownership.
Peer Forum - 5 December 2007
Who is Supermicro New Zealand anyway? Who are the people behind? If you are curious, we would be keen to meet you face to face. If you have learned about why MIT in the US is exposing its syllabus and lecture contents on the net and yet charging students many tens of thousands for school fees, you will appreciate the value of face to face exchanges. We plan to hold a technology briefing in Compucon House in Albany on 5 December 2007. We plan to provide some technology tutorials in the afternoon and do an IT industry overview in the evening. The event has been held by Compucon New Zealand for the last 15 years, and will be extended to accept Supermicro channel members for the first time. If you are interested in attending, please email us at
