2nd Generation Opteron Technology goes into Supermicro by Compucon solutions
The Opteron has made a big splash some 2 years ago and has allowed AMD to win over a spectacular 20% of global server market share from Intel within a relatively short period of time. Intel has since regained some market share with their Dual Core Xeon (based on Woodcrest - Core 2 Architecture) and has consolidated their recovery effort with Quad Core Xeon processors (Clovertown). We do not expect AMD to sit still. AMD released released their 2nd generation Opteron some time ago but it is described by the widespread industry as lacklustre in opinion. Why? The 2G Opteron is simply (a) a change of socket from 940 pins to 1207 pins, and (b) a change of memory support from DDR to DDR2. Many customers described it as a new bottle for old wine. Today at last, AMD releases the Opteron 2222 (Dual Core for Dual Processors) and Barcelona (Quad Core). AMD has claimed that the Opteron 2222 has scaled over 3.0GHz and performs better than a Woodcrest of the same speed. Barcelona is Quad Core and has many new features that improve computational performance as well as Hyper Visor based virtualization. This is an interesting time. Supermicro New Zealand will gradually introduce more Barcelona capable systems in the near future.
Personal & Executive Back Up System
The direct support of Supermicro New Zealand by Compucon has enabled a brand new and unique product to be made available to Supermicro New Zealand channel members. This product is a system consisting of an external notebook size hard disk and a software that schedules, automates and encrypts the back up (and recovery) of files including Outlook emails. It is a product for personal level back up and is not in the class of tape libraries or auto-loaders. The context is for smaller businesses that may be using tapes, DVD, CD, NAS, removable HDD and a variety of back up devices. For sure, we can use it for backing up files of a server under Windows 2003, or a workstation or PC or laptop under Windows XP Pro 32 (or Vista Business 32). We can even use it to back up the whole system image by using NTBackup if the hard disk is larger than the footprint of the system image. Channel member price is $78 + GST for the system (software and HDD enclosure). Produce code is #5QB25.
