Introducing the Popular Supermicro 1U
Leading Value and Performance with 4 x Hot-Swappable SATA
Auckland, NZ, 21 June 2007 - This is the inaugural newsletter from Supermicro New Zealand to selected people in the IT industry who have been in contact with us. We appreciate that there is no lack of information on the Internet and our newsletter series does not intend to add to the big pool. Our newsletter series will aim to filter off unnecessary information and to highlight key information for your ease of reference. The article below will introduce a specially designed 1U system that will improve operational efficiency for many customers.
The Supermicro 5015M-MT+ from Compucon is configured with a Core 2 Duo (Conroe) CPU, also known as the Xeon 3000 series. It can take up to 4GB of standard DDR2 memory for a very low price or 8GB for a premium (since 2GB modules are proportionally more expensive). There are 4 hot swappable caddies for SATA hard disks that can be set up using the onboard HOST RAID. We can also install a PCI or PCI-X hardware RAID card for higher performance and increased reliability and compatibility reasons. Interface with the external world is provided for by 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The chassis of this model is 19.8” or 503mm deep. If you want a shorter chassis and do not need so many hard disks, you can consider the 5015M-MR+ or 5015M-MF+ models. Mounting rails are optional and must be specified at the time of ordering.
The chipset used for the above 3 systems is called the 'Mukilteo 2P'. Intel has announced a new chipset named 'Bigby P' for release at the end of this year. Bigby supports 45nm Core 2 processors with up to 1333MHz front side bus whereas Mukilteo supports Core 2 processors up to 1066MHz FSB only. Intel has not announced the release date for 1333MHz processors yet and the end of 2007 is likely. There is a catch though. Bigby is only backward compatible with Core 2 whereas Mukilteo is backward compatible with Pentium, Pentium D and Celeron. Therefore we expect Mukilteo to stay as the mainstream chipset for at least 6 months.
In case you require high computational capacities but fewer hard disks we can supply a 1U Twin system. 1U Twin consists of 2 separate systems with their own Dual Socket Xeon, motherboard, memory, hard disks, and a shared power supply and chassis. In simple terms, each system takes up the space of 1/2U only and is the smallest system in the world so far.
Supermicro New Zealand is hosted by Compucon New Zealand, an IT solution and service operation with ISO-9001 quality management certification. Compucon is well known in New Zealand for zero workmanship defect and fast material warranty fault rectification. All systems supplied by Compucon go through a thorough testing process individually before shipping. If a Microsoft O/S is included, the system will be installed with optimized drivers chosen and well tested by Compucon. This added value from Compucon is to raise system performance and to enhance compatibility and stability through experience throughout the years. The team based in Albany is well praised for their expertise and helpful support. If you believe you do not require the high level of quality assurance as provided by Compucon, you can alternatively source barebones and parts from us but you may find that this lower purchase price will cost you more in the long run. Supermicro barebones have 1 year RTB warranty whereas Compucon systems have 2 years.
