Intel Atom for Servers (Centerton)
30 August 2013

For the first time we will be introducing a new server platform based on an Intel Atom processor in September. This is Intel's first Atom processor to be designed for servers and will provide many benefits such as relatively low power, low noise, and low cost in a small form factor while offering support for ECC RAM (up to 8GB) and hardware virtualisation. As with all our servers it will come standard with Dual Gigabit Ethernet and also a dedicated RJ45 port for remote hardware management (IPMI 2.0).

The Atom S1260 processor is unique in that it is an SoC (System on Chip), meaning that it has integrated all components of a computer onto a single chip with the design intention of consuming less power, lower cost and higher reliability than the multi-chip systems that it replaces. There is no PCH (Platform Controller Hub) or a South Bridge to speak of. The chip itself will draw no more than 8.5W while the complete system is expected to draw less than 20W.

In comparison this new Atom will also bring a welcome performance boost to the older Atom D510 or N2800 processors; independent synthetic benchmarks indicate a performance increase of around 37% and 46% respectively over the two Atom processors it replaces.

  • Intel Atom S1260 (2C/4T) 2.0GHz 8.5W VT-x 64-bit
  • 4GB or 8GB DDR3-1333 ECC SO-DIMM
  • Dual GbE (Intel i350AM2) plus Dedicated IPMI LAN port
  • Conventional PCI revision 3.0 slot via optional riser card (1U) or low profile (Onyx); suitable for 3.3V or Universal 32-bit PCI cards
  • 4 x SATA 3.0 (6Gbps) ports (Marvell Host RAID 0 or 1)
  • 2 x USB 3.0 ports (NEC controller)
  • Serial port and VGA port (Matrox G200eW graphics)

It will be available as a complete system in the form of a short 1U rack-mount (depth 250mm) or a small yet versatile desktop chassis (250 x 265 x 95mm) that can take a combination of drives and an add-on PCI card.
