New Xeon V2 for X9S Platform (Ivy Bridge)
  28 May 2012

Not long after introducing the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture for desktop systems last month, Intel has released new Socket LGA1155 Xeon processors for Uni-Processor server platforms this month. They are identifiable by a V2 suffix in the model name i.e. Intel Xeon E3-1230V2 as opposed to E3-1230 (previous generation Sandy Bridge). These V2 processors are approximately 5-15% faster while consuming less power than their V1 counterparts and will soon by offered at the same price points.

Other than incremental performance and power usage improvements the new Xeons also support PCI-Express 3.0 (two x8 links) and DDR3-1600 memory (two channel four DIMMs) directly off the CPU.

The existing Supermicro X9SCM-F motherboard will support both generations of Xeon processors as long as the BIOS is version 2.0 or above. This applies to the X9SCx family of motherboards and more details can be found here: http://www.supermicro.com/products/nfo/BIOS_Upgrade_Instruction_E3-1200_V2.pdf
