2U Twin2 and 3U Storage Chassis
  27 May 2011

The 2U Twin2 system provides 4 hot-pluggable DP nodes in a 2U chassis. It can cost up to 20% less and uses 50% less rack space compared to traditional 1U DP servers. This makes it ideal for render farms or companies requiring up to 4 servers as it is both cheaper to procure initially and cheaper to run in the long run; especially if the system is to be hosted in a data center. With an optimised Gold-level 93%+ high efficiency rated redundant PSU shared amongst all 4 systems it is very efficient with power usage as well.

Each of the 4 hot-pluggable nodes in the 2U Twin2 system provides:
  • Up to two (2) Intel Xeon X5600/E5600 processors
  • Up to 96GB DDR3-1333 memory (potentially 192GB)
  • A low profile PCI-Express x16 slot
  • Dedicated IPMI 2.0 port with KVM and Virtual Media over IP
  • Intel Dual-Port Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • 3 x hot-swap SATA drive bays
The new SC837 storage chassis from Supermicro allows the installation of up to 28 x 3.5" hot-swappable drives in the space of a 3U. With SAS expander technology this allows us to add up to 84TB of capacity (using 3TB drives) to any existing server as long as it has a spare PCI-Express slot.

Supermicro New Zealand recommends Fitness for Purpose and Total Cost of Ownership as the criteria for purchasing decisions and we sincerely believe that both the 2U Twin2 systems and SC837 storage chassis should be given plenty attention as they provide very unique benefits.
